What is Restylane Kysse made of?
A hyaluronic acid gel made only for lips. Galderma built it with XpresHAn Technology, which is a fancy name for a simple idea: the gel stretches when your mouth moves and settles back afterwards instead of sitting there like a block.
- 20 mg/mL hyaluronic acid with 3 mg/mL lidocaine already mixed in, so the numbing starts as it goes in.
- FDA approved in April 2020 for lip augmentation and the fine lines above the mouth, in adults over 21.
- Smaller particles than most lip filler gels, which is part of why it feels soft rather than lumpy.
- Hyaluronic acid, so it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if you want it gone.
How long does Restylane Kysse last?
Every clinic writes "up to twelve months" and leaves it there. Here are the actual numbers from the trial that got it approved, so you can work out what one syringe will do for you.
What one syringe of Restylane Kysse actually gives you
Sixty percent at a year is a good number. It is also not a hundred, and the people in that trial had a median of 2.50 mL placed across the upper lip, lower lip, corners of the mouth and the lines above the lip, with a top-up at four weeks built in.
Most people walking into a Richmond Hill clinic get one syringe in the lips alone. On that dose, plan for six to nine months and treat anything past that as a bonus. If someone promises you a guaranteed year off a single syringe, they are quoting a brochure rather than the study.
One thing worth knowing in Kysse's favour: the comparison filler in the same trial needed 3.35 mL to reach the same point. Less product for the same result is a real advantage, and it is the reason the gel has a reputation for looking restrained.

Lip filler swelling, day by day
Lips swell more than anywhere else on the face. Knowing the shape of the fortnight ahead saves a lot of panic on day two.

Bigger than you asked for, possibly uneven, maybe a bruise. Ice, sleep propped up, and do not judge anything yet.
Most of it drops away
The obvious puffiness lifts. Lips may still feel firm as the gel settles into the tissue. That is normal and it softens.

Does Restylane Kysse hurt?
Less than people brace for. There is lidocaine in the syringe and we numb the lips beforehand, so most of it is pressure rather than pain. Lips are the most sensitive spot on the face though, and we will not pretend you feel nothing.
How much filler do I need the first time?
Usually half a syringe to one syringe. Naturally thin lips show a bigger change from the same volume than lips that already have some fullness. We would rather start light and add at your two week check than take something away.
Can Restylane Kysse be dissolved?
Yes. It is hyaluronic acid, and hyaluronidase breaks it down, usually within a day or two of the injection. Most people need one session. We also correct migrated or overfilled work done at other clinics.
Will my lips look overdone?
Only if too much goes in. The gel itself is one of the softer ones and it was designed to move with your face. Overfilling is a decision, not a side effect, and it is the decision we will talk you out of.
How soon can I go out afterwards?
Same day, if you do not mind being puffy. If there is an event in the diary, book at least two weeks ahead. Skip the gym, alcohol, saunas and hot yoga for the first 48 hours, since heat and blood flow both make swelling worse.
Is Restylane Kysse better than Juvederm for lips?
Neither is better across the board. Kysse is softer and more flexible, which suits a very expressive mouth. Volbella is firmer and better at a crisp border. Ultra XC gives more obvious volume. Who should not have lip filler?
Anyone under 21, anyone with a history of severe allergy or anaphylaxis, people with bleeding disorders, and anyone sensitive to lidocaine or other amide anaesthetics. Active cold sores mean we reschedule. All of this comes up at your intake.
